Subject: Request to discontinue all moderation of emails effective immediately!

Dr. Friedlander,

As per the continuing and serious difficulties resulting from email
moderation (emails being blocked for moderation overnight interfering
with college business), we request that all moderated lists be
"unmoderated" effective immediately.  The moderation of these lists has
never gone through any formal collective bargaining or shared governance
procedures, is interfering with the conduct of college business, and is in
violation of the IA contract with regard to the IA being able to communicate
with it's membership.  The moderation criteria have never been disclosed,
and the delay is unacceptable.  Employees have a reasonable expectation of
having electronic communications sent immediately (or within a few minutes
at most).  This is our modern world and our school prides itself on being
technologically capable.  We have truly regressed in this capacity.

There are also some liability issues I wish to draw your attention to.
Should there be an emergency situation on campus, perhaps during evening
classes (when your moderator has gone home, or perhaps during a day when
they are not in, or perhaps they are out to lunch), affected faculty would
not be able to send out an email to the campus community.  Consider, for
example, the two hour delay in campus wide email notification at the
Virginia Tech shooting.  Although the reasons for the delay were different,
consider the consequences if our faculty would not be able to send out any
campus wide emails during an emergency situation (be it gunman, earthquake,
or fire).

We urge you to discontinue moderation immediately.

Erin:

At yesterday's EC meeting we agreed to discontinue moderating e-mails. In the meeting I will have with you on this topic, I will discuss what steps we can take to inform members of the college community that use the official mailing lists to limit their messages to college business to prevent e-mail clutter. we will rely on the professional judgement of our faculty and staff to determine the types of massages to send using these e-mail lists.
