  • You are to review the short draft of three others in the class and provide feedback.  (1) Say what you "like" about their draft, (2) Indicate some other things you would like to learn about the topic, (3) Give some suggestions on what you could add or change in the paper.
  • Continued our discussion of gravity, orbits, etc.

  • NEW OUTSIDE ACTIVITY:
    Our SBCC Astronomy Club is co-sponsoring 'Changing the World through Science and Entrepreneurship' with Wayne Rosing, founder of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (http://lcogt.net/). *Friday, Feb. 26, at 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM in the BC Forum.* Wayne's team invented JAVA at Sun Microsystems and he later was in charge of Google Engineering. Now he wants to connect telescopes for anyone's use in the world - an exciting concept!! * There are limited tickets available. Get one from me after class (if you get a ticket and don't show - you lose points).
  • SBCC Astronomy Club Meeting:
    Our first meeting (of two) for the semester will be Saturday, Feb. 27 at Noon in EBS 102. Our first get together for the semester will be to renew officers and plan the remainder of the semester. ALL welcome.

  • JPL Trip this Friday (for those who signed up).  Meet 7:50 am by the EBS loading dock (just outside of class).  Will be back around 5 pm. 
  • STAR PARTY OUTSIDE ACTIVITY THIS SAT 3/20 (7-9:30 PM):
    Saturday March 20 is our Extra Credit SBCC STAR PARTY (anytime 7 - 9:30 pm)!  This is the only date currently scheduled, so try to make it if you can (weather permitting).  In addition to the extra credit, it's a great opportunity to look through telescopes at some of the many interesting things you are learning about in lecture!

  • Final drafts due today.  If aren't done, check with me after class for "special" permission for an extension.
  • Reviews again required for three papers (different ones than last time).  Post by the week after spring break.
  • Start preparing your poster board.  Instructions to be given in class.  We may begin presentations the week after spring break.  Extra credit for the first few presentations.

    You will receive credit equal to a "Star Party" or "Planetarium Show".  Don't miss out!!!

    Fred Marschak is running a trip to the IMAX theater in LA to view two spectacular films on their 7 story tall IMAX screen.  The cost is $35 (with a $10 cash rebate for astro club members).  The trip is from 10 am to 6 pm next Sunday 4/11.  The films are "The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti 3D", and "Hubble 3D".  Here is a link with more info on the films:

    LAST CHANCE:  IMAX TRIP plus $10 rebate*

    Go to the SBCC cashier and pay your $35 ASAP.  *Club members, as of Sat. 4/3,  who are paying full price, will get a $10 cash rebate at IMAX.  You may sign up non-club members but they will not get a rebate.  We will open the trip to all the classes on Monday, 4/5.  LAST CHANCE.

    Timetable for IMAX trip
    * Be at SBCC by 9:50 AM on Sunday, 4/11
    * OK to park on campus near the Bookstore/EBS Building
    * Bus will have restroom
    * Lunch - OK to take your own but CA Science center has 3 areas,  A McDonalds, a Taco Bell, and the Rose Garden Café for hot entrees and salads.
    * 2 movies in IMAX 3-D.  This is not the dinky IMAX like you may be used to.  This is the true IMAX - a 7 story IMAX screen!!!!!

    Return to SBCC about 6 PM.
